An Allentown, Pa., chiropractor who billed insurance companies for exams that never took place pleaded guilty last week to insurance fraud and will serve at least five months in jail under a plea agreement, the Morning Call newspaper reported on Tuesday.

Dean K. Ziegler, 49, will be eligible for parole after serving five months under the terms of a plea agreement he reached with the Lehigh County District Attorney's Office, the newspaper reported, quoting Senior Deputy District Attorney David Mussel.

Ziegler was in Lehigh County Prison for violating his parole in an unrelated case in January and February 2009, but he allegedly billed five insurance companies for more than $3,300 worth of exams that he said he conducted during that time, according to the Morning Call.

Investigators determined Ziegler had billed the insurance companies for 10 appointments that never took place and billed insurers for 12 manual therapy treatments, which cost more than the therapy that had actually been done, the newspaper said.

Ziegler is also charged with assaulting his girlfriend at his home, which doubles as his office, in September, according to the Morning Call. Police said he punched 34-year-old Jill Aleene Bartholf, broke her nose with a kick and threw her down a flight of steps.
