An Allentown, Pa., chiropractor was sentenced to 23 months in jail last week for submitting false billings to insurers and for committing an assault on his girlfriend at his home-office, The Morning Call newspaper reported last week.

The Allentown newspaper said Dean K. Ziegler, who advertises workers' compensation services on his website, was sentenced last Thursday to spend between five and 23 months in Lehigh County Prison. The combined sentence was handed down in separate cases.

A prosecutor said Ziegler billed insurers for some treatments that were never administered and overbilled for manual therapy sessions in other cases. The newspaper said the chiropractor admitted drugs and alcohol played a role in both cases.

Ziegler pleaded guilty last month to insurance fraud and simple assault.

Prosecutors said he billed five insurance companies for more than $3,300 worth of exams that he said were performed between January and February 2009. During that period, Ziegler was in Lehigh County Prison for a parole violation in an unrelated case.

Ziegler was ordered to pay more than $6,000 in restitution.
